2015-16 HandbookSeptember 2, 2015
Dear Band Students and Parents/Guardians, I am very excited for this upcoming performance year. In band, students are expected to be part of a team and contribute to performances. They learn this by playing in and outside of class daily. Behavior Expectations Since there are so many performances outside of school, all students are expected to practice school wide behavior expectations: Respect, Responsibility, and Safety. And of course, all DOE school rules apply. We want to represent Kea’au Middle School appropriately in our playing as well as our behavior. Grading 25% Performances 50% Daily Performance Playing in class Classwork Homework turned in 13% Practice Cards 12% Sectionals/Afterschool Rehearsals *Class work and participation are essential for band. Students will be responsible for contributing their portion of the music. We are all learning a skill for the first time and we can only succeed if we all do our share of the work. Please ensure that your child brings his or her instrument and music to class daily. Monday – Periods 1, 2, 3 Tuesday – Periods 6, 4, 5 Wednesday – Periods 3, 1, 2 Thursday – Periods 5, 6, 4 Friday – All Periods Supplies The school will provide most of the supplies, like instruments, music, and mouthpieces. Attached is an instrument responsibility contract that will be signed by parent/guardian and student. Woodwind players will have to pay for reeds. The cost is $2 per reed. If your child plays a woodwind instrument, except flute, a reed is mandatory for class. I will be assigning an instrument to students today; he/she will be responsible for it until the end of the school year. Any damage or loss to the instrument will be his/her responsibility. By signing the form attached, you are letting me know that you are aware of this responsibility. IF YOUR INSTRUMENT IS DAMAGED, PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO FIX IT ON YOUR OWN! Bring it in and I will fix it. If I cannot repair it myself, the student will be responsible for the repair fee. Students may not sign out instruments to take home until both student and parent/guardian sign the form. Reminders:
Uniforms The Kea’au Middle School Band polo shirt will be required for all performances for the Advanced Band. The cost of each shirt is $17.50. If your child already has one from last year or from another sibling, they may use it again. Advanced Band will wear the polo shirt, black slacks, all black shoes, and black socks. Beginning Band will wear the lime green school uniform for performances. Band Boosters The Kea’au Band Booster Club is our parent support group who organizes fundraisers, help with moving equipment for performances, and help chaperone the band on outings. I encourage all parents to become active members of our booster club; we need everyone’s support. Meetings will be held every semester. Band Booster dues are $25.00, cash is preferred. Traveling with the band is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I believe that all of our Kea’au students should experience. The Advanced Band has traveled to California, Florida, and Maui. Raising funds is a priority for the Kea’au Band Booster Club if we plan to go on other off-island trips in the near future. After school/Lunch Recess Rehearsals After school/Lunch recess sectionals or rehearsals are mandatory to participate in performances. The schedule will come out later in the year. Students will let me know if and when they can meet after school. I will try to make accommodations for students who catch the bus home and we also have the UPLINK All-Stars bus at 5:15pm. Sectionals or rehearsals can be made up if your child brings a note i.e. doctor’s appointments signed by a parent or guardian. The Advanced Band is split up into two different periods, we especially need to work hard this year to meet and be at every scheduled rehearsal. Mondays and Fridays from 2:15 – 3:15p Sectionals once a week during lunch (TBA) Performances The following performances are required of all Advanced Band members.
